Club Pointscore (Season Final)

Unfortunately the breeze let us down and racing had to be abandoned.   Otherwise would have been a nice finale to 2023-24 with crews ready and keen to get out on the water.

However no complaints as we had a very succesful season.  There was a strong resurgence in numbers, great racing and no floods.

Don't forget our Fun Day, AGM and Presentation on Saturday 6th April.  Always a top day and not to be missed.  Everyone is most welcome.   More information closer to the day and watch this space.

The 2024-25 Season (Club's 80th) starts on 7th September 2024.

Some great news.

Former CRSC VJ Rapture has been donated to the Club.    Rapture was sailed very succesfully in the 1980's and great to have it back in the shed.   After some minor repairs we're hoping to have it out on the water again soon.

The following information was supplied by Daryl Eggins - one of Rapture's former owners:
Rapture was bought from Belmont in 1980/81 while at a State High School Sailing Championship, previously named Rob II (?). It was a fast boat, won fastest monohull on corrected time (handicap) in the 1982 bridge to bridge race. That race had several Brisbane 18ft skiffs competing & was a strong nor-easter blowing the whole way! A great ride! The VJ class was one of the best boats for teenagers, many famous sailors coming from the class including Americas Cup winner John Bertrand.

The second last round of the Club’s Pointscore Series was sailed on Saturday with two races completed across a wide variety of conditions.   An unpredictable south easterly breeze shifted and surged all afternoon producing gusts everywhere between five and fifteen knots.   Crews were kept busy but enjoyed some very competitive racing.

With no floods this season, 39 individual races have now been completed in the Series, making it one of the most successful in a long while.

Unsure of what the breeze would do, race officials hedged their bets by setting different courses for each race.  Race #1 was a single lap sprint around the standard course.   Race #2 was much longer with two laps sailed – each following a different track.  Crews needed their wits about them to navigate the more complicated route but to everyone’s credit, no errors were made.   Total distance sailed was around 15 km and took about 90 minutes to complete.

Hobie 18 crew Lindsay Cowan and Tansie Higgins dominated the Catamaran Division with a perfect score of 2 out of 2.   Perfect timing at the starts and adapting quickly to the relentless wind shifts they were always the team to beat and a well-deserved result.   Taking out second place, rival Hobie crew Luke Denham and Shae Martin were always in striking distance but just couldn’t close the gap.  Shae skippered in the first race and did a magnificent job in his first sail in many years.  With the breeze strengthening in Race 2 Luke and Shae narrowed the gap considerably and had their rivals made the slightest error the results could have been very different.    Nacra skipper Ben Higgins took out the bronze in both races and sailed well in the challenging conditions.    Mosquito crew Greg Lee and Deb Michell were unlucky to tear their main sail in the first race and had to retire.

Competition in the Monohull Division was as tight as ever.  Five Lasers and an NS14 faced the starter before a breakage forced the NS to retire leaving an all-Laser fleet.  The huge variation in wind speeds favoured neither the light or heavy weather skippers and left the competition wide open.  The pattern in both races were similar.   Neil Burgess and John Nelson both started strongly and held their ground for much of the course.  Shawn Neilands, Deb Parkin and Peter Zietsch were just astern and looking for opportunities.   The final windward leg was the decider with big gains and losses taken by all boats as they constantly tacked to stay in the most favourable wind.   Peter Zietsch found the sweet spot by hugging the northern bank until a couple hundred metres out from the line then tacking to finish closer to the pin.  With the line steeply offset this shortened the distance to travel and gave him just enough edge to claim the prize.    John Nelson took out second place in both races.  Third prize went to Neil Burgess in Race 1 and Deb Parkin in Race 2.
